Legend, icon, champion, GOAT!
The name Georges St-Pierre (GSP) sits comfortably next to those words and descriptions. With a record of 26-2, this welterweight king is why many mixed martial art fans follow the sport. He captured the imagination of not only his homeland but the fight community all over the world. A true professional who dedicated his sporting life to MMA. His compulsive preparation and relentless pursuit of excellence set him apart.
Who else could leave the sport for 4 years then come back and challenge for a belt the weight class above where he once dominated. Short answer, only GSP. If the great GSP decides to return to the octagon, “what is next” on the horizon for this once in a generation fighter.
Here are six options, with a likelihood score attached to the possibility.
A Megafight with “The Notorious” Conor McGregor:
This challenge would be the biggest fight in MMA history. It would transcend the sport. This fight would not need a title on the line. GSP would be a nightmare matchup for Conor McGregor. MMA wrestling, his karate-based kicks and his fight IQ would ensure “The Notorious” would have major issues if ever locked in an octagon with “Rush”!
Fight for the Welterweight UFC Championship:
The current Welterweight champion Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley has been crying out for respect and a “Money Fight”. The opportunity to regain the belt he relinquished could be the challenge to get his competitive juices flowing. This fight would be a massive battle as Woodley has great wrestling and could be the hardest hitter GSP has ever faced. Would team Tristar come up with a plan that could derail the current champion. In my opinion, even with a title up for grabs, there are other fights that appeal to GSP with less risk.
A show stopper against Nate Diaz:
How many fight fans wouldn’t want to see Nate Diaz vs GSP!
Nate could try to avenge his older brothers lopsided defeat back in 2013. GSP could headline a return to the spotlight against an opponent with a massive following. In my opinion, this fight is really attractive for the GSP camp. His fight style and skill set would give Nate Diaz absolute fits.
Fight for the Middleweight UFC Championship:
Staying at middleweight was always going to be difficult. Michael Bisping was tailormade for GSP, and some would say he “cherry picked” his opponent, took the title and vacated as soon as he could. Who knows if he ever really had any intention of defending the belt. Robert Whittaker (or Yoel Romero depending what happens in Chicago), would not be a great matchup for GSP!
Fight Anderson Silva:
A fight that should have happened years ago. GSP vs Spider in their prime was the fight so many fight fans wanted to see. Unfortunately, the champion vs. champion contest never eventuated. I for one would still love to see it. Think Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather, hopefully, if it was to come to fruition it would be more exciting than that. In my opinion, this fight doesn’t excite the fans or GSP.
Make a professional boxing debut:
Why not, everyone else seems to be switching from Boxing to MMA, or MMA to Boxing! Why not GSP? He has some of the best MMA boxing in the sport. A transition even at his age wouldn’t be as farfetched as it sounds. The right matchup and the right money this has more possibility than a few of the first five options!
In my opinion “The Notorious” Conor McGregor is the one big challenge that could bring the great Georges “Rush” St-Pierre back to the octagon…….
