Jon “Bones” Jones vs. Daniel “DC” Cormier
If the stars were to align correctly. If Daniel Cormier was able to overcome Stipe Miocic. If Jon Jones gets out of his own way. Who would be the victor of an unfinished war. The trilogy of two of the best to ever do it.
Today its “Jersey” Nick vs “Aussie” Wayne in this second installment!
“Aussie” Wayne’s verdict: Daniel Cormier by unanimous decision.
Good vs evil, clean vs dirty, real vs fake!
You can build this fight up in any which way you like. This fight would not need the “Colby carry-on” to sell PPVs!
Daniel Cormier deserves the chance at redemption, an opportunity to cement his place in P4P rankings.
Far too much controversy surrounds the second fight between DC and JJ, surely, they run it back!
Could lightning strike 3 times against a world-class competitor and champion of our sport in Daniel Cormier (yes-one was changed to an NC).
Undefeated against all other opposition, slayer of the scariest most skilled opposition, could Jon Jones really pull off another victory over the American wrestling idol?
In my opinion NO!
Daniel Cormier has shown growth in his evolution as an MMA fighter even at the age of 39. The first fight Daniel Cormier was over emotional, he let the build-up consume him, he went for the man instead of sticking to the game-plan. It was only his 16th pro fight.
In the second fight, I believe Daniel Cormier was on the right path to victory. He made a mistake, one that Jon Jones had predicted a long time ago. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, I hear you say. That tendency to lean to the side exposing his head and making him vulnerable surely has been corrected.
Look at his resume in recent times, Volkan Oezdemir, Anthony Johnson (twice), Alexander Gustafsson, the who’s who of the light heavyweight division in their prime!
Keys to victory for Daniel Cormier include his famed wrestling. He needs to feint that takedown and make Jon Jones weary of it. This is the key to closing the distance and getting inside that reach advantage Jon Jones holds. The dirty boxing from the second fight also needs to be included in the game plan. Push the taller man against the cage and neutralize his elbows and knees.
The one target I have never really seen any fighter attack is Jon Jones stick-like legs. Low calf kicks and oblique kicks, use Jon Jones’s own weapons against him!
Would Jon Jones be the same after another extended layoff? Would ring rust exist?
In my opinion, Jon Jones didn’t look the same in the OSP fight. He also didn’t look the fighter a lot of the MMA community consider the greatest of all time in his second matchup against Daniel Cormier-until the head kick.
The mystic of Jon Jones is fading; the failed drug test; the out of cage activity!
Surely the sporting gods allow Daniel Cormier one last chance to right the wrongs before the sun sets on a decorated career!
“Jersey” Nick’s Verdict: Jon Jones via round 4 TKO
There is so much controversy and rivalry between these two. With all of that and a heavy dose of high-level skill, this fight sells itself 10 out of 10 times.
Jon Jones is arguably the greatest mixed martial artist of all time. His legacy is tainted however with poor decision making on his part. He has not only acknowledged his faults but has taken responsibility for them. I am by no means excusing any of his behavior, but this is not about his behavior, it is about his ability to win fights.
In their first meeting, Jones won a clear unanimous decision victory. In the second fight, he scored a great head kick which leads to the finish. This was later turned into a no contest due to sketchy USADA results, but that is a totally separate argument. Jones even went as far as telling Cormier how he was going to finish him in a presser beforehand.
Jones is currently 22-1-1 with his only defeat coming to Matt Hammil due to an illegal elbow landed causing himself to be disqualified. Every opponent they have put in front of him suffers the bad end of the fight.
I believe that lightning could and would strike 3 times in this particular instance. Daniel Cormier will go down as one of the best to ever do it. His legacy has been cemented either way.
Would Jon Jones bring home another win should this trilogy take place? In my opinion 100% yes.
I would like to write a long drawn out description of why Jones would win, but honestly, I do not think it is needed. He is a natural athlete with natural ability and evolves as the fight goes on.
He never brings emotions into the octagon and makes on the fly game plan changes during the action.
He has honed his skills over many years. Even when he has been sidelined to fight he continued to hone his striking and competed in Jiu-Jitsu to keep improving.
The short breakdown is this: Jon Jones prevails in every aspect of this fight with the exception of wrestling. Cormier could impose his wrestling ability on anyone, but once the fight ends up on the mat Jones would use his high-level BJJ which makes a long day for DC.
I along with many of fight fans hope that the stars align just right and allow these two to settle the score once and for all.
