“Human cockfighting” once was a popular phrase coined by Arizona Senator John McCain when the UFC burst on the scene in 1993. However, if that same mentality still exists, Mike Vick’s past dogfighting ring looked like a house party hosted by the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.
Exciting, entertaining and fresh were a few words to describe the inaugural Bare Knuckle FC in Cheyenne, Wyoming on June 2. Bare Knuckle FC 1, which featured MMA notables as well, was the first sanctioned bare-knuckle fighting event in the U.S. since 1889. An extremely polarizing sport that puts you on the edge of your seat, while maintaining an underground image appeal of bare-knuckle fighting. The stories aren’t just legend anymore. Less than one month away from Bare Knuckle FC’s sophomore event and the countdown has begun.
However, some might say not enough attention has been paid to this phenomenal attraction, despite a young promotion introducing quality fighters to its roster on a consistent basis, including Chris Leben and Kendall Grove recently. Strapped solely with their heart and hand wraps, an extreme amount of bravery is needed to compete in the unknown, which is a testament to combat sports.
While the official fight card has not been released what is certain is that the semi-final round of the heavyweight tournament will be taking place.
Maurice Jackson will face Sam Shewmaker
Joey Beltran will face Arnold Adams
The two winners will face off in the finals of the heavyweight tournament.
As more information becomes available we will be putting it out.
Fresh means ahead of the curve. Similar to what UFC used to be, BKFC is the newest combat craze to take the nation by storm. Stay ahead of the curve. In time, similar progression will evolve as that of its predecessor. Bare-knuckle boxing will eventually find a niche audience and potentially do to Mixed Martial Arts what MMA did to Boxing. It’s a fighting spectacle ready to breakthrough, possibly to a state near you.
However, currently, most states won’t sanction bare-knuckle events. Does that sound familiar or not? If the same mentality still exists, New York might keep this combat sport out of its state for a while, but that won’t detour the efforts of this young, determined promotion. Following a successful inaugural event, less than three months later BKFC will be hosting its second fight card in Biloxi, Miss. on Aug. 25. It took the UFC nearly four months (Nov. 12, 1993-March 11, 1994) between a first and second event. So by that measure, Bare Knuckle FC is off to a quicker start.
And why not? People love striking and bare knuckles bring it to another level. It’s not just about how much you can deliver, but it’s also about how much you can handle. Raw and intense, which reminds us of when we started watching combat sports and witnessed brutal matches for the first time. It’s the unknown and it’s very entertaining/interesting.
The term “human cockfighting” was a political angle generated when MMA was once feared and unknown by the American public, basically just another uneducated opinion. However, ladies and gentlemen, it has been 25 years since then and now there’s a new show in town. Will BKFC experience a sophomore slump on Aug. 25 or is there a new world order currently forming within combat sports?
