Aussie Wayne’s Verdict: Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov via 3rd round TKO.
26-0, repeat 26-0, Khabib Nurmagomedov has never lost a fight. And please, don’t tell me that Michael Johnson “Rocked” him. Do me a favor before you say that, watch the replay without the sound on. I really love Joe Rogan, he is one of my favorites, but geez he carries on. I repeat Khabib was NOT rocked.
The greatest exponent of Sambo the UFC has ever seen, Khabib doesn’t just ground and pound you, he gets top control and smashes you after chasing a takedown with relentless forward pressure, skill and strength not seen at 155lbs.
Khabib’s striking game is based on a good heavy jab, awkward angles, and power shots. Many say his stand-up is a weakness, but please remember it is there as a lead into setup the takedown. Let’s not get this twisted, Khabib has power in those hands, it may not look pretty, but it is effective.
Let’s not forget he took on and destroyed Al Iaquinta, who is no mug on his feet. Khabib not only destroyed him on the ground but took the points in the stand-up.
Yes, Khabib does walk forward too square, again, he does this to allow for his takedowns.
Conor McGregor will fancy his chances of catching him coming in. He may very well catch him, all Khabib then does is shoot for a takedown and controls him on the ground.
Once Khabib has grappling control, there is no way McGregor gets out of his clinch. Pushed against the cage, Khabib will win every exchange. I see McGregor being rag dolled for 3 rounds before he turtles up.
Let’s talk cardio, Khabib has plenty, he doesn’t stop. McGregor, well, we all know he gasses. To knock out Khabib, McGregor will load up early as he did against Diaz, loading up on all shots tires out McGregor, see history as evidence.
McGregor’s only road to victory is the left hand. He can’t wrestle with Khabib, he can’t run from Khabib! If he doesn’t land an early blow I see this being a one-sided mauling.
McGregor’s kicks and spinning attacks cannot be used. If he throws one of those he ends up on his back with the Russian bear smashing him with the scariest ground and pound in MMA.
Watching the way Khabib has handled every opponent, I can’t see how McGregor’s ground game off his back allows him to escape…… I just can’t see it!
I see this being McGregor’s last fight. Money takes that edge. Once a struggling plumber, he is now a multi-millionaire, I believe he won’t have the required desire.
Power: Hands to McGregor, ground, and pound Nurmagomedov.
Trash talk: McGregor
It’s time the MMA community woke up and realized that this is a terrible matchup for so many fans biggest idol. Enjoy the lead-up, enjoy the press conference, because once that cage door is locked “The Notorious” Conor McGregor is in for the fight of his life.
“What time is it, Dana”
It’s Khabib time.
Jersey Nick’s Verdict: “The Notorious” Conor McGregor via 2nd round TKO.
McGregor has been in his fair share of wars. The Notorious steps into this fight with a record of 21-3. I know what some will say, “He has lost while Khabib is undefeated.” That is 100% true, but let’s dig down a little bit more. McGregor has faced the better competition. This is not an opinion it’s pure fact. He ran over the 145 division when he was there and obtained gold. He then went up and became a double champ. Since coming to the UFC he has only met defeat from one man….which was Nate Diaz via submission. Oddly enough his other two losses have come by way of submission in his Cage Warriors days. Since his last appearance at UFC 202, he has ventured out into the world of boxing and went 10 rounds with Floyd Mayweather arguably the greatest boxer of our time.
Don’t get me wrong McGregor has been on the bad end of exchanges. he has been rocked and in trouble. He has shown a will to keep going and win fights. I wouldn’t even call it will though. He is so arrogant and full of himself he will not allow himself to fail which is exactly what he needs to maintain coming in to face the Russian bear. With his two year absence, he has been stripped of his belts, but that is beside the point. I believe he has grown in that time. A fighter like that does not miss gym days and trains hard every day. Also, with his previous history against grapplers, I would guess that he has fixed his issue in that area. His fight IQ is off the charts and he adjusts on the fly with the best of them.
McGregor’s advancements are a mystery in the ground department. His coaches say that he is ready and they generally give very accurate information. Moving on to his striking he is levels above his Russian opponent. Khabib has a good job but he leaves his chin out in the wind. He did it against Al Iaquinta to prove he can strike which was smart on his part for that fight. The difference is McGregor’s striking capability is levels above anything he has faced. If he takes that approach in this fight which is a strong possibility the percentage of him going to sleep continues to grow.
I think that there is so much strategy to be witnessed as long as egos can be put aside. Khabib comes at you straight and forward and has a gas tank that never finds empty. McGregor was built for this type of fight and is even better countering off of his opponent. Will Khabib try and prove his striking is on par?
Odds are he may try that for a round or two, but the end result will be him doing what he does best. Set-up, takedown, control, ground and pound, repeat. He has said many time already that he has no intention of finishing this fight though. he wants to punish McGregor for 5 hard rounds. A wise man may rethink that strategy. You don’t get points for bravery.
The real question at hand for the hardcore fans is simple…Can Khabib control McGregor with his ground game before he can land that straight left hand?
After putting a lot of thought into this fight, assuming that he has upped his takedown defense, and believing that Khabib will try and do exactly what he has been saying I think he lands it.
Cardio is another factor in this fight. Dominik Cruz stated prior to UFC 202 that he does not believe that Conor has a style built for 5 rounds. I applaud you Mr. Cruz for the accurate assessment. It has been proven to be true and probably remains that way. Khabib, on the other hand, has a style that could go 10 rounds if needed. Another factor in the grand scheme of things.
Then there is the almighty hail mary attempt. Picture this…the fight starts as we all see it and The Notorious lands an early takedown. This shakes up the entire fight. Do not put it past him to try something outrageous.
Striking: McGregor. While Khabib edges him out in the ground and pound area overall Conor wins the striking battle.
Cardio: Khabib. Unless McGregor has done some serious road work I can’t see Khabib falling to number two in this area.
Wrestling: Khabib. No explanation needed.
Trash talk: McGregor.
Unlike my Australian counterpart, I think this is a great match-up for McGregor inside of 3 rounds. With many fights, he is involved with he begins to diminish in the deep waters. Unfortunately, I believe that he lands that destructive straight left and puts Khabib away. With so much high-level skill though this fight has the potential to go in any direction.
On one final note, Mystic Mac has made some wild predictions in the past. You know what else Mystic Mac has done? He has been right. Let’s see what his official prediction will be for this fight. I bet it matches mine.
Per McGregor, I can make you rich. I’ll change your bum life. You fight me it’s a celebration. When you sign to fight me it’s a celebration. You ring back home you ring your wife. Baby, we done it. We’re rich baby. Conor McGregor made us rich. Break out the red panties we’re rich baby.
